I was randomly thumbing my iTouch today to kill some time. After awhile, I ended up in the 'General' screen of 'Settings' and found an option for International Keyboards. To my surprise, I found a long list of a bunch of different languages. The list includes French, Dutch, Polish and many south east asia languages such as Japanese, Korean and Chinese!
Very curious of the Chinese inputs, I decided to give them a try. It offers both a handwriting input and a pinyin input. I first tried the handwriting input. As someone who has not written Chinese in ages, my Chinese writing sucks. But the recognition engine of the iTouch is superb. The next thing I know, I was having fun challenging myself to remember the few Chinese characters I still remember to write. It recognized most of my writing without flaw, even those written incorrectly, but mostly accurate. It also contains the feature to guess the next character as you write, a feature almost all Chinese character input software contains nowadays.
I will give the pinyin input a spin next time I need to kill some time. I encourage all non-English users to check out the keyboard options and try out the keyboards for your favorite language. You might be surprised how well it works on the iPhone/iTouch. I know I did.
