    • This mobile version of The Wall Street Journal offers equal doses of appreciated polish and unfinished features in its initial release.
      • Before phones show up at retail, they start showing up in totally random places in China -- it's basically a law of physics. And once that happens, they almost inevitably end up posted in a forum somewhere, and... well, you can gather where that leads. Chinese firm Ludle -- which, according to its own description is in the business of "exploiting, producing and selling" -- somehow came across a Pre (or possibly just an empty shell thereof), and a staff member took the time to do a quick set of…
        • You'd have thought the Word of God was free, wouldn't you? After all, it's not as if the Author is going to want any royalties! The reality is that most translations of the Bible in most languages are copyrighted to the translators and publishers - after all, they've got to make a living too, or [...]
          • Improvements now see Apple's MobileMe Web service worthy of checking out. The Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg now feels it worthy of a recommendation. Mossberg, whose opinion can make or break a product or service, has revisited his earlier take on the MobileMe service, which got off to a disastrous start when it was launched last [...]
            • Apple has been busy with some paperwork recently. Potentially pointing toward new features, a couple of patent applications were recently filed. According to the patent filing:
There is a need for providing a user interface in a personal media device that minimizes either or both a user's physical and visual interactions with the personal media device, especially [...]
              • Though we’re still about two months from the WWDC keynote and new iPhone hardware, that hasn’t stopped the most audacious maker of iPhone knock-offs, HiPhone, from creating a rip-off of the still unannounced iPhone nano. Yes, meet the HiPhone nano. On the outside, it looks like an ancient iPod mini, if only Apple had no [...] This article is copyright Cultomedia Corp .
                • We've got a report and a photo showing that the Palm Pre is already in the hands of accessory manufacturers, along with a few little real-life tidbits about its build quality. Compared to the iPhone, the tipster found the Pre's screen a little more easily scratched and its back a little more resilient (though easily fingerprinted). The tipster also states that the Pre is in mass production right now, which would be necessary if the rumors about an imminent launch are true. The photos show that the…
                  • Orbicule has announced that Undercover , their long time theft-detection and device recovery software for the Mac, is being released for the iPhone in the App Store. The software pretends to be a game, tricking the thief into running it, at which time it sends location information to the owner's account on RetrieveMyiPhone.com , where they can view it's location on a map and alert police of the crime.
                    • Not only Nokia's earnings—world's cellphone power house #1—have dropped a whooping 90% and won't recover next quarter, but they have lost 10% of the high-margin smartphone market to the iPhone and Blackberry. Not good. [ Bloomberg ]
                      • Verizon Communication's CEO Ivan Seidenberg said the company believes it is on solid footing in the U.S. From this, it will begin to evaluate growing its business outside of the U.S with iPhone. Speaking in an interview, Seidenberg said that the company is not interested in getting into the wireless retail business in other countries. Rather, [...]
                        • Hey guys, want a Verizon iPhone? Well, leave it to Verizon Communications CEO Ivan Seidenberg to completely crush all of your hopes and dreams for the next few years . He does basically admit to the WSJ that he wants the iPhone on Verizon ( just like his customers !), saying that, once Verizon goes to its 4G LTE network, Apple would be willing to work with them. See, he says Apple never seriously considered making a CDMA iPhone . Meaning you should flush all of your hopes for a CDMA iPhone forever. LTE,…

                              • Boomboxes. Synonymous with hip-hop. Synonymous with loud. Its standing in the cultural zeitgeist has faded over the years, but their past glories and appetite for D batteries will always be loved and adored by me. Perfectly timed to complement (or perhaps aid in) the rise of hip-hop, the boombox rose to prominence in the late 70s and early 80s. Panasonic, Aiwa, JVC, Sharp, Conic, Yamaha, Sony and Lasonic were all kings of the street. In it's most idealized form, the boombox was monolithic—both in…

Boy was I psyched to see this app show up in the App Store yesterday.  It’s called Soccer Manager, is from Fizz Software, and is a football management game a la Championship Manager / Football Manager.
I am crushed that it will not run for [...]
                                  • Filed under: iPhone , App Store , iPod touch , App Review Reversi, sometimes known under the trade name Othello is a really terrific board game. The game goes back to at least 1888, and is said with some truth that it takes a few minutes to learn but a lifetime to master. Reversi has been very popular as a computer game for many years. In most versions you can play another human, or play against the computer. It seems popular among Mac enthusiasts, and Ted Landau, who created and oversees the venerable…
                                    • In a refreshingly open, straight-shooting interview with the Wall Street Journal , Verizon boss Ivan Seidenberg -- who has a reputation for being candid -- talked about virtually every hot-button topic facing its business today, starting with the love-hate relationship it shares with fellow partner Vodafone in its Verizon Wireless joint venture. Seidenberg reiterated that he'd love to take Vodafone's 45 percent off its hands, but admits that the prospects are unlikely in the short term; he goes on…

I used to be a big fan of Age of Empires, and think I still have a disc for it laying around somewhere.  So I was interested to see a recent post at TUAW, that points out that some of the developers who worked [...]

                                            • Gel Swatch Library won't cause any designers to throw out their swatch books which contain lighting gel samples. But the app does put a helpful tool in their hands and could be a valuable reference with a few improvements.
                                              • It’s been fairly quiet around here lately, at least in terms of unwarranted application rejections by Apple, so it comes as no surprise that we have finally come across a brand new case. We were recently made aware of an application called Peekababe that was rejected by Apple due to its excessive sexual content. Don’t [...]

                                                  • Chased through a trap-laden forest by an axe-wielding murderer, Hysteria Project is a step in a much darker direction for the iPhone.Reviewing Asteroids-esque shooter The Void last week, I mentioned that some iPhone games are ditching the cute and getting darker. With their first release, the BulkyPix team have taken the anti-cute movement further: chopping [...] Related Posts GigaOM: Nintendo’s DSiWare Demo Disappoints GigaOM: How To Make Money From iPhone Games NewTeeVee: Unskippable Slaps Around…
