iPhone News Of The Day [04/09/09]

  • No need to twist your dial -- you really have just stumbled upon this week's episode of Ask Engadget . You know, the place where you can send in your question to ask at engadget dawt com and hope to see it plastered for the world to have a think on. This week we've got one from J.S., so we'll let him take it from here: "The new iPod shuffle is so small you can simply clip it onto your shirt while running or working out. However, I'd never buy it because of two reasons: iTunes and the…
    • One of Boing Boing's readers managed to build his own steam-powered iPod charger . When your iPod goes "up in smoke," at least it won't mean an emergency trip to the Genius Bar. A Lego Technic Motor was attached to a Jensen #75 steam engine to make a crude generator. He then added a 5V regulator circuit and soldered a female USB connection. He also added some circuit protection. It even looks like a cute little rest stop on the Oregon Trail before you had to dump all that leftover buffalo…
      • Available In: Cydia       Price: Free   Today there was an update to Rotation Inhibitor, a SBSetting add-on toggle that allows you to turn of the auto-rotate feature on your iPhone or iPod Touch. The update does a few pretty cool things. It adds the Rotation icon for all the default SBSetting’s themes (which is nice!), it fixes [...]
        • SwirlyMMS is a native iPhone application that brings the missing MMS feature to the jailbroken iPhone (at least until this summer as Apple has finally included the MMS feature in iPhone OS 3.0). It's easy to use and allows you to send photos, text messages, audio and video files to...
          • Last October, Apple started using unibody designs in their MacBook and MacBook Pro. A newly uncovered patent suggests that the next product to incorporate this aluminum case may be the iPod. The patent shows that the iPod's new casing will be carved out of a single, large and thick block of sheet metal, making the device lighter, thinner and sturdier. Although it may be a significantly stronger product, with it being made out of one slab of metal, it seems that it would be harder to take the iPod apart…
            • We just got an exclusive first look at the Peapod from Chrysler's Global Eco Mobility unit. Like its cousin the GEM , Peapod is a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle, which means it's limited by law to 25 mph and can't go on the highways. Peapod gets about 30 miles on a charge, and adds in all the "car" goodies that GEM was lacking. The vehicle seats four in lightweight Arion-inspired seats, has suicide doors for easy entry, a windowed roof that can be removed for some open-air driving, and…
            • News doesn't get much worse than this for the Zunes and Sansas of the world: a whopping 0% of surveyed teens planned on buying their devices, with 100% wanting an iPod in the coming year. Piper Jaffray's biannual Teen Survey, in its eighth year, shows a serious drop off in interest for the Zune and Sansa. From last year's not-great 15% figure to this year's unfathomable 0%, it's just ugly. But are these numbers accurate? For one, SanDisk had some decent numbers around 2007, but this…
              • Qualcomm's fledgling FLO TV service might be on to something this time. President Bill Stone's announced plans to offer mobile broadcast to phones via add-on peripherals, including an iPhone 3.0-compatible antenna /chip accessory that's currently in the works, although without an estimated release window ( Business Insider suggests it'll be ready sometime next year). The company's also looking into accessorizing Windows Mobile phones, either with a plug-in or some device that connects…
                • In an email sent out earlier today, Apple is inviting all registered iPhone app developers to test their apps with the Apple Push Notification service for the first time. Prior to this, the service was available for testing by just a select few developers. Now Apple has invited all registered developers to the program.
                  • Apple has sent out an e-mail to registered iPhone Developers letting them know they can now start testing Push Notifications on their applications in the iPhone OS 3.0 beta 2. According to the e-mail, developers can log in to the iPhone Dev Center and take a look at the Push Notification Programming Guide as well [...]

Here’s something to keep iPhone devs busy over a holiday weekend (in the US at least).  And a very good something indeed.  Apple has let developers know that the iPhone Push Notification Service is now available for testing.
This should lead to lots of good [...]
                      • A couple of people in Houston, TX claim that their iPhones were damaged after working out at the gym from sweat seeping into the bottom of the iPhone down near the dock connector, according to CNet. While most cell phone moisture sensors are located under the battery or somewhere else within the phone, that’s not [...]

Friendfeed – my favorite ‘web conversations site’ (for lack of a much-needed better phrase) – has launched a new beta this week, which includes a major re-design and a switch to all real-time updates. In an article covering the new beta, Venturebeat has some [...]
                          • Apple sits atop BusinessWeek’s list of “The 25 Most Innovative Companies” for the fifth year in a row, according to a statement released Thursday by the magazine and the Boston Consulting Group.
The news should come as no surprise to anyone who keeps up with trends in the computer, telecom and entertainment industries, though the [...] This article is copyright Cultomedia Corp .
                            • There are a lot of music apps available for the iPhone. What do most of them have in common? Actually the question is, what don’t most of these apps have in common? Artist and musician apps in particular seem mostly to be cut from the same mold, offering very little in the way of originality, [...]

                            • For all its flaws, we can understand why someone who can say they had anything to do with designing the iPhone's user experience would be a hot commodity among manufacturers and platform firms, but RIM? mocoNews is reporting that Don Lindsay, who spent the last five years at Microsoft working in the Live Labs and Vista teams, has made the jump to Waterloo to lead up the user experience team. Prior to Microsoft, he lead the OS X user experience group, which the Ottawa Citizen reports created the user…

                                  • Apple has been exploring the prospect of an iPod model with a unified enclosure similar to the “unibody” MacBook and MacBook Pro computers, an patent filing discovered by MacNN disclosed today. In the course of discussing the design, which would use inexpensive, cost-saving sheet metal “formed in such a way that the final part looks like it was machined down from a large thick slab of material,” Apple offers a roughly sketched…

                                      • We didn't think the LG Arena KM900 was any great shakes when we briefly got to play with it at Mobile World Congress, and it sounds like our initial impression was right on the money -- GSM Helpdesk just reviewed the touchscreen handset and more or less called it a weak iPhone clone. Ouch. The S-Class 3D UI drew particular scorn for being "cumbersome," and the browser was "sluggish" and "uncomfortable," taking some 30-40 seconds to render pages. There were some positives,…
                                        • By default, every e-mail you send from your iPhone includes the same signature: "Sent from my iPhone." Nice as it is to crow about your hip, trendy choice of communicator, you might want to consider something different. For example, maybe you don't want the boss to know you're out and about instead of slaving away at your desk. Or maybe you feel the sig needs a dose of your sparkling wit. Whatever the case, it's easy to change your e-mail signature. Tap the Settings icon, then tap…
