iPhone News Of The Day [04/10/09]

  • You know what really gets on our nerves? When we're listening to Van der Graaf Generator (look it up!) on our newfangled iPod Shuffle and it pronounces the band's name wrong. Seriously, this is an important function. Without it working flawlessly, how are we going to know the names of the tracks we purchased on the iTunes store and placed on the device ourselves? Thankfully, someone at Apple has heard our prayers, and as of today the VoiceOver Kit 1.0.1 is available via Mac OS X software update…
    • A wave of gift card code crackers have begun barraging iPhone developers asking them to participate in a scam to defraud Apple of thousands of dollars. A glut of iTunes gift code counterfeiters have forced the price of an illegitimate $200 iTunes gift card down to $2. Unable to turn a profit, they have started turning to developers, offering to buy their app a potentially limitless number of times using the counterfeited codes in exchange for 50% of the sale profits.
      • MacProVideo submitted a new app to the App Store that will allow users to watch tutorials on their iPhone.
        • (Credit: CNET) To go along with my obsession with software, games, and all things iPhone-related, I also have a healthy(?) obsession for basketball. March Madness is over, but there's still the NBA playoffs coming up on April 19. A few teams are still in the playoff race, even with only a few games to go in the regular season. While my team didn't even come close to making the playoffs (Hint: We Believed), I will still be watching a few of the playoff matchups and can't wait to see who makes…
          • Whatever the Zune HD is, if what's depicted in this slick cache of images is real, I want one real, real bad. UPDATE : We have reason to believe it's legit and a bit more info. We've been told that these design concepts were indeed produced for Microsoft, so the artwork is real, not some fanboy's 'shop. Which means that the Zune HD itself is hopefully just as real and yummy. Update 2 : Technologizer's sources "close to the Zune team" confirm Zune HD is the fourth-gen Zune.…
            • It’s all about the camera Thanks to one of our very own writers, we were able to catch Apple on quite a large gaffe when they unintentionally posted a job listing that contained references to an iPod with a camera. The offending portion was later removed, but we still have images to prove it! The iPhone [...]
              • His baby prematurely splayed over all the internet , Mike Arrington pulls back the rest of the curtain on the CrunchPad web tablet . It still sounds fantastic. It's a truly stripped little slab, designed by Fusion Garage : The "bottom-up" Linux OS it runs boots directly into a new version of the custom WebKit-based browser, with a total software footprint of just 100MB. The 12-inch touchscreen is capacitive (i.e. multi-touchable), and it runs on an Intel Atom chip (previously it was on…
                • Stanford University has recently begun offering a free iPhone app development course via iTunes U. The 10-week course is hosted by Apple engineers who walk students through every aspect of iPhone app development. We've taken a look at the first lecture and really enjoyed it. You'll need to already know Objective-C to actually dive in and start writing apps with this course, but it's great to check out even if you're just curios.
                  • Well, we're circling in, folks. Hot on the heels of learning that Sprint employees have the Palm Pre in hand for training, there's word from all sides that Sprint has put a vacation blackout on the month of May for retail employees, which would seem to imply that the Pre will be launched sometime in there. We saw similar vacation freezes on AT&T's end for both iPhone launches, and those ended up fairly accurate. We haven't seen this memo personally, or threatened any Sprint employees for…

                          • Last weekend, New York Times’ Virginia Heffernanhit a resonant chord with me in a wonderfully crafted piece eloquently relating why she hated the iPhone experience so much she returned her iPhone to AT&T, replacing it with a BlackBerry. The nexus of Ms. Heffernan’s iPhone discontent was mainly an issue that I can identify with — her [...] Related Posts GigaOM: Why I Think Apple’s Touchscreen Netbook Is Real GigaOM: iPhone 3.0 Revs Up Apple Payments Systems TheAppleBlog: The End of an Era…

                              • Cleaner in styling than similar preceding budget-priced all-in-one sound systems we've seen, Memorex's new Mi9490 ($140) combines an iPod- and iPhone-ready dock with a CD player, an FM radio, and two 2.5" speakers. The system is pitched as capable of playing music loud, thanks to a 30W amplification package, and it's equipped with an Infrared remote control so that you can get far away from the speakers before turning them up. One small oddity: the…
                                • There haven't been a lot of iPhone-ready clock radios, and most of them have come from iHome, so it's nice to see that Memorex is adding to the options with a low-priced, nice-looking unit. Mi4290 ($80) features a large, high-contrast screen, highly simplified top buttons, and dual alarms, plus an included remote control, FM radio, and a universal iPod/iPhone-ready dock on top. How does it compare with iHome's similarly sized dual-alarm clock…

According to the release notes, version 1.0.1 of the kit includes corrected pronunciation for several artist names, as well as minor bug fixes. Notably, the update currently requires users to run Apple’s Software Update utility, and exit iTunes before installing. It weighs in at 17MB on the Mac.

Plus, the most addicting iPhone game yet? All in a week's work in the App Store . Coachella : I haven't been to a big festival in a while, but this app really makes me want to go to Coachella, even though Paul McCartney is headlining one of the nights.
